How do alternating current induction motors work?

When power is applied to the AC induction motor, a magnetic field is generated in the stator of the motor, which is the stationary part. That magnetic field then mingles with the rotor – the bit of the braking induction motor that spins – in the process making it turn. The rotor is connected to the item you are powering, so if it spins, so does the item. This is how a fan moves air, or a washing machine spins clothes.
